This page sets out how membership works in our association, in clear and practical terms — how to sign up, how renewals happen, what your rights and responsibilities are, and how we look after your details. If anything is ever unclear, the committee is always happy to talk things through.

Eligibility
Membership is open to anyone over the age of 15 who supports the purposes of our association and submits an application for membership via our online membership form or a paper form at events and activities. There are no other specific eligibility requirements. Acceptance of membership is at the discretion of the committee.

Purpose
Members agree to support Nillumbik Reconciliation Group Inc.’s Statement of Purpose:

  • Acknowledgement of the traditional Aboriginal people’s ownership of land taken by force in Australia, particularly in the Nillumbik area.
  • Community education about the ongoing effects of disadvantage that Aboriginal people have faced.
  • Working for social justice for Aboriginal people today.
  • Raising the awareness of the community about contemporary Aboriginal culture and the ancient and enduring spiritual connection to the land in Australia.
  • To work with Local Government and other groups with a similar purpose.
  • To produce cultural centres, markers and local names which honour the Wurundjeri people’s significance in the area.

How to Join
Submit a membership application either online or in-person using one of our printed forms, and pay the required fee. Your application will be reviewed by our committee retrospectively at its next monthly meeting. If not approved, you’ll be notified and your membership fee refunded. Membership is non-transferable.

Fees and Renewal
Membership fees support the ongoing work of the association. The annual membership fee is $10 for individuals and $20 for families. Payment can be made online by credit card, via bank transfer, or in person with cash. Renewal is yearly, based on the anniversary of your joining date. The association reserves the right to request proof of identification or proof of valid concession.

Member Rights

  • Voting at general meetings
  • Attending and contributing to events, activities and meetings
  • Accessing general meeting minutes and association documents on request.
  • Receiving a copy of the associations email newsletters, unless you opt out.

Member Obligations

  • Support our Statement of Purpose
  • Comply with these membership terms and committee decisions
  • Keep your contact information up to date at all times
  • Be respectful to other members
  • Act in a way that upholds the reputation and values of the group.

Suspension, Resignation and Termination
You may resign at any time by notifying us in writing. Membership rights are suspended when annual fees are unpaid by the due date. Membership will end if annual fees remain unpaid for 12 months or more, or if the committee determines a breach of the membership terms has occurred, following proper disciplinary review. Annual fees are not refunded for resigned or terminated memberships.

Disciplinary Action and Dispute Resolution
The committee handles disciplinary matters if a member fails to comply with these terms or acts against the group’s values. You’ll be notified and given a chance to respond. An appeal process is available. For disputes, members should first attempt to resolve them informally. If needed, the committee will oversee further resolution, which may involve a mediator.

Privacy
Personal details collected for membership will be kept secure and only used for association purposes. You can contact us to view or correct your information. Details will not be shared outside the association except as required by law. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
