SUMMARY:First meeting for 2025
DESCRIPTION:Our first meeting of the year will be on 5th February 7.00-9.00pm\, at the Old Eltham Courthouse. Julie and I have met to discuss how NRG will look in 2025. There are changes afoot\, with some changes to how our regular meetings happen. It’s also exciting that we now have an Aboriginal Partnerships Officer at Nillumbik Shire Council who I’m sure will be a great support to NRG as we will be for her. \nWe have had lots of thoughts – however we need to discuss these with you so we can set a program plan for the year\, and share the workload. I do hope you can be there on the 5th to share your thoughts and opinions. We’ll email an agenda to the mailing list the week before the meeting.

SUMMARY:January 26 Dawn Gathering 2025
DESCRIPTION:Last year some of us joined with Reconciliation Banyule at a dawn gathering at Eltham North Adventure Playground (ENAP). Whilst it was freezing it was a magical time to be there. Julie and Jan M have decided they will go down to ENAP at 6.15am again this year. We are not organising anything formal\, but encourage anyone to come along and reflect on the meaning of the day. We will focus on 26th January as being Survival Day  We hope more like minded people will join us. We can only do this from our own individual perspectives\, but the controversy around this date being chosen as Australia Day has implications for all Australians. You are encouraged to bring any relevant writings\, or just thoughts\, to share. \nPlease come along and bring anyone else you think might be interested.  Maybe bring a thermos\, cup\, chair and snack.

SUMMARY:Relive Captain Cook's arrival from an indigenous point of view
DESCRIPTION:Eltham Bookshop\, witht he support of Nillumbik Reconciliation Group\, warmly invite you to celebrate a very special evening with Darren Rix and Craig Cormick\, authors of Warra Warra Wai. \n‘Warra Warra Wai’ was the expression called to Cook and his crew when they tried to make landfall in Botany Bay. It has long been interpreted as ‘Go away’\,\nbut is perhaps more accurately translated as ‘You are all dead spirits’. \nBoth 250 years late and extremely timely\, Warra Warra Wai is an account of what First Nations people saw and felt when James Cook navigated their shores in 1770. \nThe answers lie in tales passed down from 1770 and in truth-telling of the often more brutal engagements that followed. \nThe price of entry includes one copy of the book\, Darren Rix’s music and an insightful conversation)

SUMMARY:NAIDOC Week 2024
DESCRIPTION:NAIDOC Week 2024 commemorates the theme “Keep the fire burning! Blak\, loud and proud” honouring the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture – with fire a symbol of connection to Country\, to each other\, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. \nNAIDOC\, originating from the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee\, is a significant annual event that celebrates the history\, culture\, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It provides a platform to recognize their diverse contributions to Australia’s social\, cultural\, political\, and economic fabric. \nThe week-long observance is inclusive\, inviting all Australians to engage in learning and reflection on Indigenous issues\, histories\, and cultures. The week is celebrated not just in the First Nations communities but also in increasing numbers of government agencies\, schools\, local councils and workplaces. It encourages community participation through cultural events\, art exhibitions\, music performances\, and educational activities that promote reconciliation and mutual respect. \nHistorically\, NAIDOC Week traces its roots to the 1920s when Aboriginal leaders and activists organized Days of Mourning to protest against injustices and commemorate the resilience of Indigenous peoples. Over time\, it evolved into a celebration of Indigenous pride and a call for unity and recognition of rights. \nToday\, NAIDOC Week serves as a vital opportunity to amplify Indigenous voices\, advocate for justice\, and foster understanding and appreciation of Australia’s First Nations’ cultures and traditions. It continues to evolve\, reflecting ongoing challenges and aspirations for reconciliation\, empowerment\, and healing within Australia’s diverse society. \nHere are some ideas on how to celebrate NAIDOC Week: \n\nDisplay the National NAIDOC Poster or other Indigenous posters around your classroom or workplace.\nStart your own hall of fame featuring First Nations role models.\nListen to Indigenous musicians or watch a movie about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history.\nMake your own Indigenous trivia quiz.\nStudy a famous Indigenous Australian.\nResearch the Traditional Owners of your area.\nStudy Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and crafts.\nWork with an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artist to produce an artwork representing the theme.\nRun an art competition for your school or community.\nResearch Indigenous history online or visit you library to find books about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.\nVisit local Indigenous sites of significance or interest.\nLearn the meanings of local or national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander place names and words.\nInvite local Elders to speak or give a Welcome to Country at your school or workplace.\nInvite a First Nations sportsperson or artist to visit you.\nInvite Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander dancers to perform.\nHost a community BBQ or luncheon.\nHold a flag raising ceremony.\nOrganise a smoking ceremony.\n\nFor more details and events\, see the NAIDOC website: https://www.naidoc.org.au/about/naidoc-week
