SUMMARY:Monsalvat Red Chair Series: Our Indigenous Melbourne
DESCRIPTION:Montsalvat is relaunching its popular Red Chair conversation series with events from July to December\, 2024\, where we can listen to experts in their field\, engage in stimulating conversations and enjoy some hospitality. In honouring this tradition\, we have developed a new series\, modelled on the past but looking to the future and dealing with the big issues facing us today. \nDr Peters\, a descendant of the Yarra Yarra\, Yorta Yorta\, Ngurai willum and Taungerong clans\, is a lifelong Richmond supporter and long-term employee at Swinburne University\, where he is currently an Associate Professor of Indigenous Studies. \nAndrew led the development of Swinburne University’s first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) and is an advisor on the Swinburne University Human Research Ethics Committee. Recent research projects include an evaluation of a study support program for Indigenous inmates at Port Phillip Prison; an enquiry into private rental for Indigenous people and the role and effect of Indigenous culture and knowledge; and an evaluation of cultural identity and continuity of young Indigenous leaders in the REAL Program of the Korin Gamadji Institute at the Richmond Football Club. \nAndrew was appointed to the Board of the Richmond Football Club in February\, 2023\, and is also on the board of Oonah Health and Community Services Aboriginal Corporation in Healesville\, and Chair of the Victorian Aboriginal Remembrance Committee as well as other community roles.

She is researching star formation rates in galaxies. In 2018 Krystal became the first non-Genomicist to be awarded the Illumina Women in Genomics bracelet\, and she has curated a national public database on Indigenous science for the Australian Council of Deans of Science. \nEntry is free but registration is required.

It provides a platform to recognize their diverse contributions to Australia’s social\, cultural\, political\, and economic fabric. \nThe week-long observance is inclusive\, inviting all Australians to engage in learning and reflection on Indigenous issues\, histories\, and cultures. The week is celebrated not just in the First Nations communities but also in increasing numbers of government agencies\, schools\, local councils and workplaces. It encourages community participation through cultural events\, art exhibitions\, music performances\, and educational activities that promote reconciliation and mutual respect. \nHistorically\, NAIDOC Week traces its roots to the 1920s when Aboriginal leaders and activists organized Days of Mourning to protest against injustices and commemorate the resilience of Indigenous peoples. DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the launch of Andrew Gunstone’s Reflections on the Voice: During and After the Campaign. \nThis book is the first comprehensive exploration of the Referendum and its lasting impact on Australia’s ongoing national reconciliation journey. \nProfessor Gunstone’s book\, written for a general audience\, explores several key areas\, including: reconciliation\, racism\, Indigenous rights\, ‘equality’\, truth-telling\, community engagements\, international agreements\, such as UNDRIP\, allyship\, and recommitting to Voice\, Treaty\, and Truth. \nProfessor Gunstone is a leading authority on reconciliation. He is Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor Reconciliation at Federation University\, where he established and leads the National Centre for Reconciliation\, Truth\, and Justice. He is also the Co-Chair of Reconciliation Victoria. \nEminent Indigenous leader\, Dr Jackie Huggins AM FAHA\, who wrote the Foreword\, will launch the book\, and will join Professor Gunstone on a panel to discuss reconciliation in a post-Referendum environment. The panel will be moderated by Uncle Charles Pakana\, Founder of Victorian Aboriginal News. \nThe event is free\, but bookings are required.

DESCRIPTION:Come explore and connect with an exhibition celebrating the life and legacy of William Barak. \nTo the colonial world he was William Barak\, to his people he is Beruk. Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung artist and the last Ngurungaeta\, activist\, leader\, trailblazer – Beruk remains a source of knowledge for Wurundjeri people through his works and he continues to influence generations worldwide. \nThe beruk exhibition\, curated by descendants of Beruk\, for the first time welcomes home two artworks\, Corroborree (Women in Possum Skin Cloaks) and a Parrying Shield back to Wurundjeri Country and community where they belong. \nHonouring Beruk’s cultural legacy\, this exhibition explores objects\, paintings and portraits Beruk and other residents of the Coranderrk Aboriginal Reserve created during the post-colonial era of the mission station. \nNo bookings required. \nAbout the gallery\nThis exhibition was created on behalf of Wurundjeri people and the community by the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation in collaboration with the Victorian Indigenous Research Centre and a Wurundjeri working group. \nberuk is the first exhibition in the Library’s newly established gallery dedicated to presenting Victoria’s Indigenous voices. Led by the Victorian Indigenous Research Centre\, the gallery will host a changing program of exhibitions and events that celebrate the stories of Indigenous Victorians and provide meaningful experiences for visitors to connect with material held in the Victorian State Collection. \nExhibitions and programming will be presented by State Library Victoria through the Victorian Indigenous Research Centre with the support of the Hansen Little Foundation. \nState Library Victoria acknowledges the generosity of Porter’s Paints in supplying the custom colour for this gallery.
