The #NRW2024 theme, Now More Than Ever reminds us that, no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will – and must – continue.
Australia’s path to reconciliation has been fraught with challenging moments that might make us want to turn away. However, in times of division, the worst response is to disengage or disconnect.
For National Reconciliation Week 2024, the theme, “Now More Than Ever,” serves as a powerful reminder that the pursuit of justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples must persist regardless of the obstacles.
At this critical juncture, addressing the unfinished business of reconciliation is paramount. The commitment of the 6.2 million Australians who voted YES demonstrates a collective resolve to secure better outcomes for First Nations people.
It is essential for supporters of reconciliation to actively defend and champion the rights of First Nations communities. We must confront racism whenever it appears and amplify the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the nation.
The effort towards reconciliation must continue vigorously in all aspects – from treaty-making and truth-telling to understanding our shared history, enhancing education, and combating racism. We need to foster connection, cultivate respect, drive action, and embrace change.
Now more than ever, we must advance reconciliation.
